I’m married to a nurse and according to her, my hands are an infestation of germs and bacteria of every known disease in the world. My wife tells me I don’t wash my hands after every moment in my life. Before I eat, I should wash my hands. After I shake someone’s hand, I should wash my hands. I should wash my hands after I’ve been outside.
In short, I should always be either washing my hands or drying my hands off from just having washed them.
Now that I think about it, I should be washing my hands more often. I should be washing my eyes more and my heart even more. Living in our world means we will inadvertently see things we didn’t want to see or shouldn’t be seeing in the first place. How many of us have been embarrassed to be sitting with our grandchildren or children when an inappropriate commercial came on the television? Yep, we need to wash our eyes.
During the course of any day, we’ll get angry, petty and find ourselves immaturely wanting things that I know aren’t good for me. I will react to moments in life and make reactionary choices without ever really thinking about them. Here’s where that becomes problematic — if we aren’t intentional about dealing with these unintentional thoughts and desires, they will take root in our minds and hearts, and eventually in our behavior.
So, let’s remember to wash our hands and when we do, let’s remember to wash our eyes and hearts.
